Meet Zach

Hi, I’m Zach

I’m a licensed psychologist in Ohio (#P.08439) with clinical expertise in treating eating disorders, body image concerns, and related mental health challenges (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma- and stressor-related disorders).

I provide individual psychotherapy and psychological testing services to adolescents (ages 14+) and adults of all ages, with a particular focus on providing affirmative mental healthcare to members of the LGBTQ+ population.

Clinical Experience

Since 2011, I have worked in various clinical settings with a diverse population of clients. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I worked as a residential counselor and case manager for adolescents with trauma histories in rural central Pennsylvania.

During my doctoral training, I provided psychotherapy and psychological testing services in a variety of settings, including a community mental health clinic, university counseling center, outpatient cancer clinic, chronic pain clinic, primary care, and LGBTQ+ community center.

Before moving to Cincinnati, I lived in NYC where I received postdoctoral clinical and research experience at the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative testing an LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults throughout the US.

What brought you to Cincinnati?

In Fall 2022, I started as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Miami University. I visited the OTR neighborhood and have lived here ever since. Outside of the office, you can likely find me and my husband at a Cincinnati sports game, seeing a show at Music Hall or Taft Theatre, shopping at Findlay Market, or trying out a new restaurant.

What do you do at Miami?

At Miami, I teach several courses related to mental health and psychotherapy to both undergraduates (e.g., Psychopathology, LGBTQ+ Mental Health Capstone) and PhD clinical psychology students (e.g., Adult Clinical Interventions, Lifespan Psychopathology). I also provide clinical supervision and consultation to psychology trainees in our Psychology Training Clinic.

I am also the director of the Body Image and Stigma among Queer Populations (BISQue) Lab, where I conduct research and mentor PhD clinical psychology students and undergraduates. My lab broadly examines risk and protective factors that influence body image and eating behaviors among LGBTQ+ populations, as well as ways to effectively disseminate and implement evidence-based and affirmative therapy to mental health providers working with LGBTQ+ clients.

As both a scientist and practitioner, I strongly believe that clinical work and research should directly inform each other to best serve individuals seeking psychological services.

Feel free to check out my lab’s website to learn more about our current research. A full list of my research publications can be found on my Google Scholar page.
